CreateSpace History

CreateSpace is a member of the Amazon group of companies with a history inevitably intertwined with that company. Amazon was launched in 1994 under the name Cadabra as an online book store, changing its name to Amazon the following year.

Since coming in to existence Amazon has acquired many previously independent companies including in 2005 BookSurge and CustomFlix. The former was established by a group of writers as an author services company helping writers to break free from the traditional model of book publication and retailing. In particular their desire to have more control over content rights and royalties led to the creation of a print on demand and online distribution service. CustomFlix was founded in 2000 with the aim of easing distribution for filmmakers resulting in a DVD on demand service.

Following their acquisition by Amazon, CustomFlix became CreateSpace in 2007 and in 2009 that was merged with BookSurge to create a single online publish on demand service benefitting from economies of scale.
