Authors earn a royalty every time a copy of their book is printed to fulfil an order submitted through any of the distribution channels you have selected. The royalty is paid in a number of currencies including the pound (£), the Euro (€) and US dollars ($).
The royalty calculation is based on the list price you set for the location where your book is printed. The royalty you receive is equal to that list price minus the share taken by Createspace.
CreateSpace Share of the list price has three parts to it
- The sales channel percentage
- The fixed charge (based on where the book is printed)
- The per page charge (based on where the book is printed)
Sales Channel Percentage
The SCPs for Standard Distribution channel are
Amazon.com & Amazon Europe 40% of the list price
CreateSpace eStore 20% of the list price
The SCP for all Expanded Distribution Channels is 60% of the list price
The fixed charges per book vary according to the number of pages in the book (including all front and end matter) and whether the interior is black and white or full colour.
The following are the fixed charges for:
Amazon.com, CreateSpace eStore and Expanded Distribution
Black and white books with 24-108 pages $2.15 per book

For a 200 page black and white book with a trim size of 8 x 10 inches and list price of £9.99, you would receive a royalty of £3.28 for a book purchased on Amazon.co.uk and printed in the UK
To earn the same royalty with a two-page full colour book also 8 x 10 inches you would require a list price of £21.66. Your list price would have to be in excess of £16 to break-even, which gives some idea of the cost of publishing a full colour book through Createspace. It is expensive!
